Weald to Waves

Connecting nature across Sussex

Creating a corridor for nature

Weald to Waves is a network of farmers, land managers, councils, researchers, schools, gardeners and community groups working together to create a 100-mile wildlife corridor from the High Weald to the Sussex coast.

The aim: connect and restore over 20,000 hectares of habitat so nature can move, adapt and recover—while communities benefit from cleaner water, healthier soils, flood resilience and richer places to live.

The Challenge

The movement was growing fast, but the digital tools weren’t keeping pace. We needed to onboard a very mixed audience— from parish groups and backyard gardeners to large estates—without confusion. Data had to be captured consistently with explicit consent, then surfaced safely on a live map. Progress needed to be visible to the public and partners through simple reporting, while the whole system remained fast, accessible and easy for a small team to edit.

At the same time, the site had to act as the hub for the corridor: promote Actions for Nature to sustain and grow participation; make pledging straightforward for parishes, private and public gardens, farmers and community initiatives; bring the corridor together with clear storytelling, walking routes and events; guide people with practical actions; provide donation pathways; and equip the team with custom reporting (e.g. pledge counts and action summaries) alongside interactive maps.

Actions For Nature Reporting

Members are invited to take part in Actions For Nature—a growing collection of practical guides designed to support rewilding at every scale, from private gardens to shared green spaces. Each action offers clear, achievable steps that help nature thrive locally while contributing to the wider corridor. Participants can log their progress using the custom online reporting tool, turning everyday actions into measurable impact across the network.

Reporting Tools

To understand the collective effect of these actions, the Weald to Waves team can visualise progress through interactive maps built with ArcGIS. Reported actions are brought together spatially, allowing the network to see where habitats are being restored, how efforts connect across the landscape, and how the corridor is growing over time. This shared view helps demonstrate impact, guide future work, and keep members engaged with the bigger picture.
